What is heirloom Red Fife wheat?
Red Fife wheat is a heritage variety of wheat dating back to the 1800′s. Red Fife wheat is different from modern day wheat in many ways.  Red Fife wheat grows 5 to 6 feet tall whereas modern “dwarf” wheat grows only 3 feet tall.  The berry (kernel of grain) has a slightly redish hue and a smoother tear drop shape. Red Fife wheat is grown for its robust flavor and unparalleled baking qualities; it has not been hybridized to increase yield and profit potentials like modern wheat. Red Fife wheat is grown for health, not for wealth.   As we say “Wheat so good it has a name!”

What makes Red Fife flour better?
Red Fife whole wheat flour is much lighter that modern whole wheat flour (the kind available on the grocery store shelf). With a subtle red hues and a wholesome nutty flavor, many recipes (cookies, brownies, banana breads) can be made solely with Red Fife whole wheat flour making it a whole grain food.  As a whole grain flour, Red Fife is unparalleled and rivals refined flours. Our slow stone milling process also differs from large commercial millers.  We grind our Red Fife wheat in small, artisanal batches to preserve every vitamin and mineral.  We grind to order to ensure you get the freshest, most nutritious flour available.  Store in the refrigerator or freezer to maintain the nutrient rich wheat germ and bran.
