What is heirloom Red Fife wheat?
Red Fife wheat is a heritage variety of wheat dating back to the 1800′s. Red Fife wheat is different from modern day wheat in many ways. Red Fife wheat grows 5 to 6 feet tall whereas modern “dwarf” wheat grows only 3 feet tall. The berry (kernel of grain) has a slightly redish hue and a smoother tear drop shape. Red Fife wheat is grown for its robust flavor and unparalleled baking qualities; it has not been hybridized to increase yield and profit potentials like modern wheat. Red Fife wheat is grown for health, not for wealth. As we say “Wheat so good it has a name!”
